The publication "Secrets of Propeller Design"Secrets of Propeller Design includes sections on fundamentals of propeller design, Pitch, Rake, Skew, Venting, Cupping, Propeller Types, Fundamentals of Cavitation, Ventilation, Blowout, Slip, Nosecones, Labbing, Gearcase design, Surface Drives, and Speed Calculation formula.

The "Secrets of Propeller Design" book ("History & Design of Propellers") presents 80 pages & 75 photos/illustrations as a detailed accounting of propeller design history,  how the first "screw" applications were invented, and how they led to early ship propulsion.

Outlining "How a Propeller Works", parts and functions of a properly designed propeller, including material selection and "advanced propping" techniques, cupping, gearcase design and nosecone application is outlined. Speed prediction formulae and propeller selection methods. This is a "must have" book for serious boaters, designers and enthusiasts that have "a need to know".

Includes sections on fundamentals of propeller design, Pitch, Rake, Skew, Venting, Cupping, Propeller Types, Fundamentals of Cavitation, Ventilation, Blowout, Slip, Nosecones, Labbing, Gearcase design, Surface Drives, and Speed Calculation formula.

What others say...
"I highly recommend the book Secrets Of Propeller Design by Jim Russell. He has the answers to your type of questions. The book will help you out immensely in finding what works best for you and understanding what's going on under the motor"..."That book is AWESOME! I bring it work leave it by the computer at home and read it over and over. There's so much useful info there". [James "Whipper", Prince George B.C. Canada, Oct 2009]

"
Probably the best overall research I've read is for full sized props and addresses racing applications" [JB - May 2013]

"This is a "must have" book for serious boaters, designers and enthusiasts that have "a need to know".[Scream and Fly on-line magazine, Feb 2006]

histor7.jpg   histor1.jpg History of the very first applications of propeller...like Archimedes' invention of the screw pump, also designed for supplying irrigation water, and the forerunner of the screw propeller. ...and like original drawings by Leonardo da Vinci containing water screws for pumping.

Screw propellers installed in the 1860 era lacked refinement, but their performance exceeded other devices of that time.  The paddle wheel was gradually rendered obsolete in seagoing ships, as the screw propeller became the only type of propulsion in ships...
Modern day propellers and the art of "advanced propping" is outlined, including applications of three blade, four blade and five-blade propellers, properties of aluminum, bronze, stainless steel and even plastic propellers.

Speed prediction formulae and propeller selection methods.
histor6.jpg   blade-pressures-and-cavitat.jpg (150x110 -- 17619 bytes) The hydrodynamic drag of the gear case can be a primary contributor to overall drag.  Manufacturers have recently realized the tremendous impact of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics on hull performance. Today outboard and out-drive design has reached a point where model changes are dictated by the design of the gear case
